Cell Phone Reception

by Martin Gomo
(Australia)

Hello,

I am traveling to Zimbabwe and staying at Hwange National Park. My job requires me to be contactable all the time, so I would like to know what the cell phone reception is like at the park, even when I'm on a game drive?
Thank-you for taking my inquiry.

Regards
Martin Gomo

Not complete coverage
by: Tony

Hi Martin.

There is some signal in certain areas of the park but it is quite limited and there is certainly not full coverage for the whole park, its 14,600sqkms of wild bush. If you stayed in certain areas and didn't leave those you might be okay but as you get further away from the main road and built up areas you will lose signal.

Regards

Sim cards are available
by: Tony

Yes, you can do that no problem. Econet is the best service provider and they have a shop on the main street, costs $2 for a sim card.

Yes computors available
by: Tony

Yes there are a couple of internet cafes in town where you will be able to use their computers.

Not sure which hotel you are staying at, but most of the hotels will have an internet room where you can log on using their computer, for instance Victoria falls safari Lodge will charge you US$10 for 180mb.

Rest camp also has a computer which you can use.

If you bring your own laptop with WiFi you will also be able to use this at various locations.

So in short, no you don't have to bring your own computer

WiFi/3G Info

Are there wireless connections available in Victoria Falls? As far as I have been able to find out there is no 3G available. Is this true to your knowledge? I want to bring my computer to use if at all possible. Thanks.

internet connection
by: Tony

As far as I know, there is no 3G. Victoria Falls works on a GPRS signal. Data sim cards are not available for purchase in Zimbabwe at the moment.

However WiFi is available at the internet cafe's of which there are a few scattered around and also at some of the hotels and lodges.

We have found that The in-da-belly restaurant at the Victoria Falls rest camp works very well, you just need to buy Chilli hotspot card from them for about $5 and then it is simple to connect. Please bear in mind though that connection speed is quite slow.

Victoria Falls airport
by: Tony

Hi Brenda

You won't be able to get a Zim sim card at Johannesburg but you can buy one at Victoria falls airport. You will see an Econet booth just as you exit the arrivals gate.

Are sims Worth It?
by: Brenda

Thank you, Tony.
As we are in Hwange NP and then Victoria Falls, is it actually worth getting a sim for our phones? - will we be able to get online (not while in the depths of safari of course) or should we just use the lodge wifi?

Mar 04, 2024
I guess that depends
by: Tony

Hi Brenda

I guess that depends on how important getting online is. It does make sense just to use the lodges Wifi if you just need to check emails etc periodically. Sim card coverage around Hwange is not great.
