Hi,

I was hoping you could help me with some information on Victoria Falls. I have been searching online and the information is quite limited because it's all based on tourism, which I completely understand, but unfortunately doesn't fit my searching needs! From your About Us page I gather you are living in SA but go to Vic Falls quite often? My boyfriend is opening up a fishing tourism company in Vic Falls, I am currently living in the States but am a South African/American citizen, and he would like me to move there and I am just trying to gather as much non-bias information that I can. The last time I was in Vic Falls was around January 2007 and as we know things have even worsened in Zim since then and I really just worry about moving there, which I am sure you can understand. I understand that life in VF is a bit different and there are more options there then the rest of Zimbabwe but I was wondering if you could help me to the degree of that. When I was there last it was so quick, literally a day, and so I didn't even see much of the town and I was wondering if you feel there is anything there for non-tourists? Do you feel you can live a relatively normal life? I mean I know I can't expect a pristine Woolies but how are the super markets or are there even super markets and just little shops? You are always hearing reports that Zimbabwe shops have no stock and I know VF has restaurants but one can't eat out all the time! Anyway, I know the ability to living in a country or city/town is very personal and depends on the person but I was hoping you could give me a feel for what you think the state of VF is in.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Thank You,
Katie

Hi Katie

Thank you for your email. Wow big questions and quite difficult to answer
because we are obviously all so different, and what’s good for one is not
so good for the other, but I will try to be as objective as I can.
Yes Zim did get worse since 2007, but I do think it has bottomed out and is
on the up, has a long way to go.
The Economy is definitely improving with the dollarization of the currency.
Goods are readily available and prices are starting to come down. There is
no woolies in Vic falls. But the shops are now full of all the basics. You
will not have to eat out all the time.
This is an email from the  main super market sent out a couple of days ago.
For you info.

You can live a very normal life there and there is quite a large local
community doing just that. I personally would love to live there
The locals have an absolutely fabulous life. Its relaxed its friendly,
it’s safe. The Zambezi is right there on you doorstep.
If you are bringing up children that throws a whole new Perspective on it,
but you haven’t mentioned that.

So it is difficult to advise but if you are an outdoors person, who gets on
with people and doesn’t mind living in a small town and likes a bit of an
adventure and doesn’t get frustrated if the phone doesn’t always work,
you will have the time of your life.

Hope that helps. Good luck

Kind Regards

Tony

Hi,

Thank you so much for getting back to me and so quickly! You're email was definitely helpful. Do you know if it's difficult to get residency there and if you can bring pets into the country? I recall going through their borders and they were really strict but is that just with currency? I have family in SA and could imagine going back and forth and just bringing things back with me to make life easier...is there a website I can see what their restrictions are?

Thank you once again for your help...it's greatly appreciated!

Hi Katie.

I really am not sure how difficult it is to get residency at the moment, but I would imagine quite difficult, depending on your color and your status. This should all change in time with the new government, but nothing is going to happen over night.

I would try and get hold of the Zim Embassy in the USA  Let me know if we can be of any further help.
Hopefully we see you there one day.

Best Regards
Tony
