Kariba Ferry

by Wolfgang
(St. Francis Bay, South Africa)

Hi, As one alternative we are thinking to go by boat from Vic Falls to Kariba. The question we have is what kind of car we need from Vic Falls to Mlibizi.

In this alternative, we would further go from Kariba to Harare with the same rental car, instead of flying via Lusaka.
Many thanks in advance - Wolfgang, South Africa

Roads are good
by: Tony

Hi Wolfgang

The roads from Vic Falls to Mlibizi and from Kariba to Harare are all tar roads and therefore any normal sedan car is fine. On the whole the roads are in good condition only the VF to Milibiz road there are a few potholes that's all.

House Boats

Hi There,

Love you website, I am so excited about our having our Honeymoon in Vic Falls/Kariba.

We will be visiting 16-22 Apr 2011

Something I've always heard about is taking a house boat trip on Lake Kariba. I didn't notice anything about this on your site. I did visit other sites but they where boring by comparison in information provided.

Given there is simply so much to see an do what feedback could you provide?

Much appreciated and thanks again for an informative unbiased site.

Regards,
Kirsty & Tony

Kariba Choices
by: Tony

Hi Kirsty and Tony

Thank you for your positive comments about our site. We really appreciate it!

We have a small section on houseboats which you can see here Kariba Houseboats. Kariba is a whole new website really and we haven't got round to that yet. It is a favorite part of the world for us tho.

How many of you are travelling? If its your honeymoon presumably only the two of you. Its difficult to find a houseboat that caters for two people. They normally cater for 8 to 10 people and the cost is per boat, so when divided by 8 it is not too expensive, but divided by 2 it works out too much for most people.

If you are doing Kariba, we would recommend Either the newly re-built Bumi Hills Lodge, which is magnificent, or Musango Safari Camp, in both of these places you will be able to game drives on land or game cruises on the Lake. Phenomenal!!!!

If you let us know you likes, dislikes and interests as well as your budget, we would be able to put an itinerary together for you, that would hopefully maximise your time there.

Prices and Information on Kariba Houseboats
by: Boo Peel

Hi Courtney

Yes, we can book Houseboats for you either from the Kariba side or the Binga side of the Lake.

There are a number of boats to choose from - ranging in price from R 3 800 (for 8 people)self catering a night up to R 6 000 excluding fuel.

We have a few of the boats information up on the site at https://www.victoriafalls-guide.net/kariba-house-boat.html - this will give you some idea of what the package includes.

At the moment there are only boats from Binga up but we can get you more info from Kariba should you need.

Houseboat on Kariba

by Tracy
(Pietermaritzburg, South Africa)

My clients are 2 adults, interested in a long weekend fishing trip on Kariba.
It might be too much for the two of them to be alone on a large houseboat.
Is it possible to join a weekend cruise of other passengers?

How about Spurwing Island?
by: Tony

Hi Tracy

As far as I am aware there are not any houseboats where clients can join others on a cruise. Zambezi cruise safaris did offer this in the past but it is no longer available.
Have you thought about sending them to Spurwing Island on Kariba. It's a great local lodge, not to expensive and they can fish as much as they want. Prime fishing area with good guides and boats.
If you need assistance booking this then please contact us.
Many thanks

Route of House boats

by Annelie
(Johannesburg Gauteng)

Can a house boat go from Vic falls to Kariba so that my guests can use the boat as a 2 day transfer instead of having to fly to Kariba.
Do you have a route map?

No Houseboats from Victoria Falls
by: Tony

Hi Annelie

Unfortunately that is not possible. The Zambezi river below the Victoria falls is narrow and has lots of rapids which is where they do the White water rafting. Houseboats are only available from the western end of lake Kariba as the river flows into the lake, which is about 300kms from Victoria Falls by road.
If you are looking at houseboats on the eastern side of the lake which is Kariba town as opposed to Binga on the western end of the lake and you don't want to fly your clients then you could road transfer them to Mlibzi about 250kms from Vic Falls and they can catch the Kariba ferry across the lake to Kariba town.
This page might help you Getting to Kariba
