What types of plugs are used in Vic Falls?

Hi there, just want to know what sort of plugs are used particularly in Vic Falls - do we need to bring special adapters to be able to charge laptops, phones etc in our room?
SA has 3- and 2-pin plugs, round pins.
Thanks :)

Plug types
by: Tony

Hi There

Plugs in Zimbabwe are predominantly 3 pin square, like the UK and not round like SA. Some older buildings do still have 3 pin round but we switched to the square ones a long time ago. Most hotels will have a bank of plugs which can cope with plug types from around the world.
To be on the safe side you should bring a square to round adapter, this will also cope with your 2 pin plugs

Luggage facilities at Victoria Falls Airport

No Storage facilities
by: Tony

Hi Ken

Sorry there are no left luggage facilities at the airport or in town for that matter. Are you staying at a Hotel in Vic Falls prior to going to Binga maybe they could store the bags for you. We would happily look after them for you at our place but not sure how you would get them to us unless you arranged a transfer. If you need to contact us send us a contact us form through the website.

Good luck

No Luggage storage but a couple of options
by: Tony

Hi Heather

Unfortunately at present there is no luggage storage facility at the park entrance. Your only options really are. 1) Ask they guys at the gate whether they will do you a favour put the luggage in their office while you do the tour. I have no idea whether they will accept this but amazing what a few dollars can do. 2) Book an organised tour of the falls with one of the operators, they would then pick you up from the border post and you could leave your luggage in their vehicle while they take you on the tour. It would possibly be best then to get this same operator to transfer you to the airport. If you need help with booking the tour or airport transfers please contact us

Hi Sharon

No there are no day trips - the flights in and out don't coincide to allow this to happen. It's also a long flight and by the time all the international immigration procedures are performed it wouldn't work.

by: Tony

If you are asking about luggage storage on the Zambian side, sorry there is nothing official. They have an office at the entrance and the best you could do would be to ask them if they will store your bags for you. Hopefully they will be accommodating as I am sure they are asked this question all the time. Zimbabwe National Parks have a website but a combined site for both countries I don"t think so.

by: Tony

Hi Jonathan.

The badges and buttons don't signify anything they are just given to the doormen by tourists visiting from all over the world. The doormen then pin the badges to their Jackets as adornment. Thanks for asking

Good Day

I am an ex Rhodie that now lives in Scotland. I am busy putting a book together that has legends, myths and tales of Southern Africa. I wish to write about a few places that are now legends, such as the Lion & Elephant Motel, the Vic Falls Hotel and so on.
Do you have any history about the hotel? Do you know where I may obtain old photos of the hotel?
Any information from yourselves would be most useful and I will be very grateful.

Kind regards

Yes they do use the Zambezi river above Victoria falls to create electricity.
On the Zambian side they divert the water of the Zambezi river just above Victoria falls and direct it through some hydro electric turbines, the water then re enters the Zambezi below Victoria falls.

Schools in Victoria Falls
by: Tony

Hi Lauren

Thank you for contacting us.

There is one private primary school in Victoria Falls. The education is excellent and it's such a nice school, your younger children will be absolutely fine there I am sure.
However when in comes to senior schools there are none to mention I am afraid. Residents who are seeking a descent private education for their children will either send them to boarding schools in Harare, Bulawayo or South Africa and this is just standard practice and one of the unfortunate things as about this place.

We actually live in South Africa at the moment for this very reason.

Let me know if we can be of any further help.

Formation of Victoria falls
by: Tony

About 150 to 200 million years ago large amounts of volcanic magma were extruded in the Victoria
Falls area. This magma (Basalt Rock) cooled quickly developing enormous cracks or faults as it met with the cooler air and water. Then due to shifts of the earth's plates and much higher rainfall, the whole area became submerged under a huge freshwater lake.

During this period these large fault lines were filled with mainly sand deposits, time and pressure hardened the sand to form sandstone. Later Tectonic movements (earthquakes) caused the lake to drain and the Zambezi River changed its course and found its present day route to the Indian Ocean.

The strong erosive action of the river found the first of these sandstone fault lines some 150 000
years ago. The water eroded through the softer sandstone quicker than through the hard basalt rock therefore forming the first waterfall.
Over the next 150 000 years the river slowly eroded 7 of these fault lines and each one would have been a different waterfall from the one we know today.

The current day waterfall is on the 8th fault line.
The ninth waterfall has already started cutting back through the next fault line. This can be seen to the side of the Devil?s Cataract through Cataract Island. This large east-north-east
fault line across the river is where the next full width falls will form.

What?s amazing is that archaeological diggings have shown that early man lived in this region some 200 000 years ago, meaning that they would have seen the very first set of Falls that were formed.

Therefore man has witnessed over time this extraordinary change in the landscape.

Hi Usch

Accommodation is in very short supply in Victoria Falls. You kind of have to be there when something comes available.

You could try advertising in the local newsletter. This is emailed out to the local community every 2nd day and just about everyone reads it. Email Cathrina Gover [gover@yoafrica.com]

Or try getting hold of one of the big operators like Wild horizons, may might need your translating services. Try Shane White on shane@wildhorizons.co.zw

I will keep your details on file and let you know if anything I know of comes up.

I am doing a project at school on Victoria Falls.
I read in a Geteway magazine about the different activities you can do in the area (Bungi Jumping, rafting, helicopter and plane rides, walking in the rainforest, ride an elephant and swim). I would just like to know some more details about the places and names of the places.
I would also like to know a bit about the animals you find near the water and/or in the rainforest (I have a section on the animals).

Animals in Victoria falls
by: Tony

Hi Hannah

Thank you for contacting us. Regarding all the activities I would suggest you look at our activity pages click here, I hope that you will be able to find all the information you are looking for there.

Regarding the animals - We also have a small section on Zimbabwe animals - click here. These animals you will find along the Zambezi River which is above Victoria Falls.

In the Rainforest itself which is just in front of the falls. You will find animals like vervet Monkeys, baboons, bushbuck and warthog. The bird life in the rainforest is also amazing.

Quite often elephants wander into the town centre, here you can see a few photographs click here

I hope that helps and good luck with your project.

Tony

Hi James

In my opinion, based on previous elections that the country has had, even in the past when there has been some violence and disruption, this does not affect the tourist destinations like Vic Falls and Hwange.
Violence, if any, is limited to certain urban areas.
My advice would be to plan as normal.
