Moving to Victoria Falls?

by John Maurice Field
(Austria)

Hi Tony & Boo and many thanks for this web site. I have just subscribed to your Bush Subscription. I'll try and keep this brief, my wife Melissa is from Harare, I am English. This December is our 10th wedding anniversary and despite a large age difference we have 2 wonderful boys, 5 & 7. My wife has just returned from VF. I retired from the Space Agency 10 years ago (early I still do Ironman races,) and we moved to a beautiful part of Austria to provide the boys and ourselves a great lifestyle. I am now considering a permanent move to VF despite the Zim situation for which I have heartfelt pain. My biggest concern would be the boys education ( they are fluent in English and German), my wife has an Aunt on the ground who like yourselves has built a good life in the tourism industry so we would not be totally without advice and support. I just read a blog on your site where you mentioned to a similar couple who don't have kids "that's another matter". I would be very grateful for any advice and will be following your site closely.

Kind regards and well done for realising your dreams! John

Some facts on the school in Victoria Falls
by: Tony

Dear John

Thank you for your post. It is obviously quite difficult to give such personal advice but I will just say the facts as I see them.
The primary school here in the Falls, is frankly IMO not up to international standards. It is a country school and has no where near the facilities that a school has in Austria or the UK.
However it has other positives in being a little more old fashioned, in a good way. Kids are taught more holistically regarding sport, discipline, manners etc, it's not all about computer games. Definitely before even thinking of moving here you would need to visit and see for yourself very carefully.
As you probably know there is no Senior school so your children would have to go to boarding school either in Bulawayo, Harare or South Africa.
I hope that helps
