Devil's Swimming Pool

by Clive Goodrich
(Norfolk, UK)

I remember a few months ago seeing a photograph of tourists swimming on the edge of the Victoria Falls. There was a big write up as if this was something new.

Well my friends and I used to swim there from 1949 until we got bored with it and then went on to swim in the Victoria Falls Hotel pool until we were eventually thrown out by the then manager a Mr Myres.

Going back to the Devil's pool on the lip of the Falls, if we swam to the bottom and scooped up some gravel and if we were lucky we could find alluvial diamonds which were washed down by the river from the Congo.

These we would sell (illegally) to a certain curio shop in Livingstone to supplement our pocket money.
