Victoria Falls Destination Overview

Victoria Falls, set on the Zambezi River and shared between Zimbabwe and Zambia, is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World — and we believe that it truly delivers on every expectation.

Standing in front of the world’s largest curtain of falling water, feeling the spray on your face and hearing the roar that gave it the local name Mosi-oa-Tunya (“The Smoke That Thunders”), is something that stays with you forever.

But Victoria Falls is far more than just a waterfall. It’s widely known as the adventure capital of Africa, offering everything from white-water rafting and bungee jumping to sunset cruises, helicopter flights and exceptional safari experiences in nearby national parks.

Whether you’re looking for adrenaline, a romantic escape, a family adventure or simply to experience one of nature’s greatest spectacles, Victoria Falls offers something for everyone.

If you’re serious about choosing the right place to stay, it’s worth taking a few minutes to read through this guide properly. A little understanding upfront can make a big difference to your overall experience.

We’ve created this guide based on many years of living and working in Victoria Falls, with detailed knowledge of the hotels, lodges and guesthouses available — to help you decide quickly and confidently where to stay based on what matters most to you.

Before You Book: One Key Decision That Changes Everything

Before comparing accommodation options, there’s one important question to answer — because it influences your entire experience.

Should You Stay on the Zimbabwe or Zambia Side of Victoria Falls?

Victoria Falls is shared by two countries: Zimbabwe and Zambia. Many first-time visitors assume staying on either side is essentially the same — it isn’t.

In our opinion, these are the key differences:
• The town of Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) is less than 1km from the Falls, while Livingstone (Zambia) is around 10km away
• Zimbabwe offers approximately 75% of the viewpoints, giving you a much broader view of the Falls
• The Zimbabwean Falls flow year-round, whereas parts of the Zambian side dry up during the dry season
• Each country has developed differently over time, with noticeable differences in infrastructure, layout and overall atmosphere

These differences have a real impact on your stay — not just what you see, but how your trip feels overall.

Because of this, we’ve created a detailed Zimbabwe vs Zambia comparison page to help you understand exactly what to expect.

We’ve also separated our “best places to stay” recommendations into one for Zimbabwe and one for Zambia. In our view, it’s not helpful to say “this is the best hotel in Victoria Falls” — because what works well in Zimbabwe may not offer the same experience in Zambia.

And more importantly, “the best” always depends on your budget, travel style and priorities.

Find the Best Victoria Falls Accommodation for Your Budget and Style

Rather than listing everything on one long page, we’ve broken our recommendations into clear categories to make it easier to compare and choose.

From what we've seen, most travellers fall into one of the following:

By Budget

Luxury / high-end lodges and hotels
Mid-range hotels and safari-style lodges
Budget guesthouses, backpackers and self-catering options

By Travel Style

Best for families

Walk-to-the-Falls convenience
Zambezi River views and wildlife settings
Quiet, private honeymoon-style lodges
Value-for-money stays and self-catering

Each of these categories links through to a dedicated page with our top recommendations and detailed comparisons — helping you narrow down your options quickly.

Who We Are at Victoria Falls Guide

We’re a Zimbabwean couple living right here in Victoria Falls. Our journey in this remarkable place began back in 1985. You can read more about that on Our Story Page

We built this website ourselves and have written all the content — including this guide — with one goal in mind: to create the most comprehensive and honest resource for planning a trip to Victoria Falls.

Alongside the website, we also run a booking service. We help travellers, who contact us, plan and book tailor-made trips. Our advice is completely free — we earn a commission from hotels and activity operators when bookings are made.

We only recommend accommodation and experiences that we genuinely believe in — places we trust and feel confident our clients will enjoy. Our reputation depends on it.

If you’d like to hear directly from clients we’ve helped, please take a look at our testimonial page.

Frequently Asked Questions – Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe Side)

Which side of Victoria Falls is better to stay on?

We’ve covered this earlier in the page, but in short — please refer to that section or visit our Zimbabwe vs Zambia page for a more detailed comparison.

What are the best months to visit Victoria Falls?

From our experience, the dry winter months (May to August) are generally the most comfortable, with clear skies, mild temperatures and excellent visibility of the Falls.

That said, the “best time” really depends on your personal interests and travel preferences. Activities like white-water rafting, Devil’s Pool, birding and game viewing all vary seasonally — as do hotel prices and availability — and these factors can influence when it’s best for you to visit.

For a full breakdown, visit our Victoria Falls Weather guide.

What is the difference between high and low season?

High season typically means higher prices, busier hotels and more limited availability.

Low season often offers better value and more flexibility — although some activities may be seasonal or weather-dependent.

It’s also worth noting that in Victoria Falls, low season does not mean low water. In fact, it usually coincides with the highest water levels at the Falls.

There are advantages and disadvantages to travelling in both seasons. For a full breakdown, including specific months, please visit our Low and High Season page.

How many days do you need in Victoria Falls?

We think, two nights is the absolute minimum to see the Falls and enjoy one or two key activities - especially when you factor in flight arrival and departure times.

Three to four nights is ideal if you want to experience the Falls properly, include a range of activities and enjoy the destination at a more relaxed pace.

Five to seven nights works well if you'd like to combine your stay with a safari experience.

We've spoken to many travellers who wished they had stayed longer - it's a common mistake to underestimate how much there is to do here.

Can you stay on one side and visit the other easily?

Yes, you can stay in Zimbabwe and visit Zambia — or vice versa — but you do need to factor in border crossings and visa requirements.

Border crossings can be time-consuming and expensive, so we wouldn’t recommend planning all your activities across the border.

That said, crossing for a specific activity — such as Devil’s Pool or a microlight flight - works well. If you do this, it’s best to group those activities into a single day.

Is it better to stay in or out of town?

This really comes down to your expectations and budget.

• Out-of-town lodges (generally 10km or more from town) offer high-end accommodation in more natural, private settings, often with meals and activities included, and in some cases a safari-style experience
• In-town accommodation offers greater convenience, easier access to activities, and a wider choice of restaurants and shops

Both options work very well — it simply depends on your budget and what kind of experience you’re looking for.

What activities can I do from my hotel?

In reality, you can do almost every activity from any hotel.

Most activities include transfers, and those that don’t are usually just a short taxi ride away.

Out-of-town lodges typically provide scheduled transfers into town, making it easy to access both the Falls and the full range of activities.

What is included in my accommodation price?

This depends entirely on the accommodation, so it’s important to check carefully before you book what is included and what is not.

Packages that include transfers and a couple of activities can offer very good value — particularly during the low season when special offers are more common.

One thing we generally don’t recommend is full-board in-town stays, as you’ll miss out on the variety of excellent dining options available in Victoria Falls.

Which hotels are closest to the Falls in Zimbabwe?

The closest hotels are:
• Ilala Lodge
• Victoria Falls Hotel

Within easy walking distance of town:
• Explorers Village
• N1 Hotel and Campsite

Slightly further (but still accessible):
• Parkway Lodges
• Cresta Sprayview
• Waterfalls Hotel
• Rainbow Hotel

Beyond these, you move into the residential suburbs, where there is a wide range of accommodation — from hotels to boutique guest lodges. From these areas, it’s a longer walk or a short taxi ride into town and to the Falls.

Which hotels have views of Victoria Falls?

No hotel has a direct view of the waterfall itself.

Some properties do offer views of the rising spray or the gorge:
• Victoria Falls Hotel (gorge and bridge views)
• Ilala Lodge (spray views)
• Shongwe Lookout (viewing tower)
• Rainbow Hotel (rooftop views)

Is location of my hotel important?

That’s a tricky question, and one that depends on what matters most to you.

If it’s important to be able to step out of your hotel and walk directly to the Falls — or easily stroll into town for restaurants and shops — then you’ll need to choose one of the few hotels located in the town centre mentioned earlier.

However, most larger hotels, lodges and guesthouses offer shuttle services that can take you into town within minutes. Smaller guest lodges and Airbnb properties may not have shuttles, but they almost always have taxis readily available at minimal cost, making it quick and easy to get around.

However, most larger hotels, lodges and guesthouses offer shuttle services that can take you into town within minutes. Smaller guest lodges and Airbnb properties may not have shuttles, but they almost always have taxis readily available at minimal cost, making it quick and easy to get around.

In practical terms, nothing in Victoria Falls town — apart from the out-of-town lodges — is very far from the Falls, with most properties within a radius of around 6km. Taxis and shuttle services make getting around simple and efficient.

How do you get around Victoria Falls town?

The town centre itself is relatively small, and if you are reasonably fit, walking from one side to the other is very manageable.

Beyond the centre, the surrounding suburbs extend to roughly a 6km radius, where many hotels, lodges and guesthouses are located. Some larger properties offer shuttle services, and where they don’t, taxis are readily available at minimal cost and can get you around quickly and easily.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that most activities include pick-up and drop-off from your accommodation, which makes getting around very straightforward.

One important point to be aware of is walking outside built-up areas. Victoria Falls sits within a national park environment, and wildlife such as elephants, buffalo and even lions can move through these areas. Walking in these zones can be dangerous if you’re not familiar with the risks, so we would always recommend using a taxi or arranged transfer where appropriate.
