Zim routes attract major international airlines

by SA Tourism news
(9th Oct 2012)

Since Air Zimbabwe suspended most of its regional routes due to financial problems, several international airlines have launched flights to Zimbabwe to fill the gap left by the country’s national carrier.

Mozambique Airlines (LAM) announced this week it would resume twice-weekly flights to Harare from October 31. The flights will also connect Mozambique’s capital Maputo to the port town of Beira.

LAM isn’t the only carrier recognising the opportunities in Zimbabwe. KLM is due to start flying to Harare three times a week in October and Air Tanzania is rumoured to launch a direct route to Zimbabwe before the end of the year.

Earlier this year, Air Namibia launched a Harare-Windhoek route, while Emirates has started servicing the Lusaka (Zambia)-Harare-route.

Meanwhile, the country has also seen the launch of a new privately owned airline, Fresh Air. Fresh Air is co-owned by Zimbabwean company Nu-Aero and SA’s low-cost carrier 1time and will be flying from Joburg to Victoria Falls. The airline hopes to add Harare to its routes in a few months.

According to a recent Zimbabwe Government Gazette, a few other local airlines including Beks Safaris, Wilderness Safaris Zimbabwe, Phoenix Air and Sol Air have all applied for airline licenses to service domestic, regional and international routes.
