Victoria Falls Bike Tour

This is a unique way to get around Victoria Falls, see sights and experience the area in a way that not many visitors do.

NOTE: The Bicycle Tours are no longer running as described below. You CAN hire a bicycle on your own when you get to town, and cycle at your own leisure. This way, you can have a look at the bicycles and if you are satisfied, make your booking then and there.

The morning or afternoon tour lasts a maximum of 3 hours and covers a distance of approx 13kms. The terrain in the area is generally fairly flat (no mountains around), but a few inclines are to be expected in a few places.

Please bear in mind that it can get extremely hot in Victoria Falls during summer (check our calendar), hence the early morning and late afternoon trips but still, this can be quite arduous.

You get to experience the local culture in Chinotimba township, scenic rides along the Zambezi River and views of the Victoria Falls from the bridge. If you have a slightly energetic nature and a bit of extra time in the Falls we would recommended doing this activity.

The bike tour starts from the iconic Victoria Falls Hotel, built in 1904. This hotel is steeped in history and well worth a visit in its own right, the High Tea in the afternoon is extremely popular - with freshly baked scones, cake and pastries served on the Stanley Terrace overlooking the Victoria falls Bridge and rising spray of the Victoria Falls. (high tea can be taken with this cycle as an optional extra).

You meet your tour guide at the hotel entrance, where Bikes and water bottles are issued. Then you make your way up to Chinotimba Township, where you definitely get a sense of local customs and culture as you wander through the bustling local fruit and vegetable markets.

You will also visit a local church, clinic and school, seeing a side of Victoria Falls that is not on most tourist itineraries. For many guests this is the highlight of the tour.

From there you continue past the local Hospital and down the main road on to Zambezi Drive, keeping an eye out for impala, warthog, monkeys, baboons, an abundance of birdlife and even the mighty elephant!

Victoria Falls Bike tour route

This is the approximate route of the Victoria Falls bike tour starting and ending at point G

You carry on to the Big Tree, a massive and ancient Baobab which is over a thousand years old, your guide will share his knowledge of the unique fauna and flora of the region.

The cycle route takes you alongside the perennial Zambezi River where you will stop at scenic viewpoints along the way and also have some snacks and drinks while enjoying the ambience of the river and its surroundings.  It's hard to believe that this seemingly placid and innocuous river will be transformed into a terrifying torrent of water a few kilometres downstream!

Leaving the riverside and rolling downhill towards the Victoria Falls Bridge, you exit Zimbabwe temporarily and enter Zambia on a gate pass (no visa required) for a perfect photo opportunity to supplement your photo album. Finished in 1905 on the command of the arch imperialist Cecil John Rhodes, it was part of his vision to create a train network running from Cape Town to Cairo. Rhodes also wanted visitors to feel "the spray in their faces" as the train puffed across the Zambezi. This relic of history remains an important road link between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

You break here to appreciate the transcendental beauty of the Falls and marvel at the rainbow that stretches across the foaming torrent of water - the perfect place to capture the moment on camera!

You return to Zimbabwe and cycle along the private pathway back to the Victoria Falls Hotel, where you can enjoy an awesome view of the Bridge covered in the spray of the Victoria Falls, as the sun sets below the plume of spray - there really is no better way to experience the majestic Falls!

The Sunrise Victoria Falls Bike tour departs at 7am (summer) and 7:30am (winter), returning to the Victoria Falls Hotel at around 9:30am for a well-deserved breakfast (not included) overlooking the Falls.

The Sunset Victoria Falls bike tour departs at 4pm (summer) and 3:30pm (winter), returning to the Victoria Falls Hotel at around 6pm as the sun sinks below the horizon.

Booking for this tour is essential not necessarily because it is over subscribed but rather to ensure that the booking runs smoothly.
