Ivory LodgeAn intimate family-friendly lodge located on a private concession in the Sikumi Forest – approximately 24 km from the Main Gate of Hwange National Park![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
IntroductionIvory Lodge is located on a 6000 acre private concession in the Sikumi Forest Reserve, just 3 km off the main Victoria Falls – Bulawayo Road and 24 km from the main entrance gate to Hwange National park. (see map) The lodge has two types of accommodation: - The lodge has two types of accommodation: - The popular Treehouses and the latest addition, the Presidential Elephant Suites (named after the well know Presidential Herd that frequent the concession) The seven treehouses are quaintly built on raised wooden platforms with large open mesh windows to the front offering elevated views of the open floodplain and waterhole. The Presidential suites are slightly elevated off the ground on wooden decks. Their private balcony allow guests to enjoy the view and some well-earned relaxation between game activities. The lodge has a large, thatched central area where the bar, dining area and reception are located. The swimming pool nestles in the lush green and shady grounds, which is home to a vast number of birds and the occasional family of warthog and mongoose. The well-positioned hide, just a short walk from the main area, offers the best views of the waterhole and proves to be a favourite with the guests. A place to just sit and enjoy the ever-changing scenery up close – this can often be the Presidential Herd enjoying a refreshing drink and wallow. The waterhole is also frequented by several plains game species and quite often some of the predators. The lodge grounds are enclosed with a fence for the safety of guests both during the day and at night, which adds to the family-friendly environment. Activities offered at Ivory Lodge include game drives into the well-known Hwange National Park, as well as night drives and game walks on their private concession. Visits to the nearby painted dog centre are also popular. In addition to the wildlife activities, guests can visit the local village and school, to learn about the lives of the community and the work that the lodge is involved together with them. Guests can also enjoy a local sing and dance group before dinner. Our OpinionAlthough the waterhole in front of the lodge is well used and the private concession is home to large herds of elephant, buffalo and other animals, we feel that better game viewing is experienced in the Hwange National Park. With this in mind, the distance of the lodge to the park and the time taken to travel this, both at the beginning and end of an activity should be taken into consideration. However, its location very close to the main Vic Falls - Bulawayo tar road makes for quick and easy access, which might suit some guests who are short of time. We like the treehouses as they are quirky and give a true sense of a safari camp. The waterhole in front of the camp, especially at night, when it is floodlit can be spectacular. From the safety of the hide, the elephants come within metres of you, which is a very memorable experience. The staff all round are very good, friendly and welcoming and go out of their way to assist and ensure you have a memorable trip. Ivory Lodge in our opinion is a good option for first-time safari-goers on a mid-range budget, who prefer quick and easy access to their safari camp, rather than long transfers deep into the park. It is also suitable self-drives wanting to explore Hwange National Park or an overnight stay on their way through to Vic Falls from Bulawayo. Summary
